Angela Shelton was born on 5 December 1972 in Asheville, North Carolina, to Johanna Shelton and Mr. Shelton. After her parents divorced, she lived for a period with her father and stepmother before being placed in foster care; she was later returned to her mother, Johanna Shelton.

The film won the Filmmaker’s Trophy at the Sundance Film Festival and earned its lead actress an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe win.
She continued writing with the television adaptation Charms for the Easy Life (2002). In 2004 she made her directorial debut with the documentary Searching for Angela Shelton, in which she traveled across the United States interviewing other women who shared her name. The project led to her 2008 memoir Finding Angela Shelton.
She has also appeared in films such as The Shrink Is In (2001) and television episodes of Pacific Blue, Chicago Hope and Becker, and won a regional Emmy for her role as Safe Side Superchick in the educational series The Safe Side.
In later years she wrote, produced and directed the feature Heart, Baby! (also known as The Hammer). Alongside her film work she has spoken internationally as an advocate, supporting rape crisis centers and domestic violence shelters.
