Career

Lal Jr. began his professional film career behind the camera. One of his early experiences in the industry was working as an assistant director on In Harihar Nagar 2, a film connected to his father Lal. This gave him practical experience before he moved into directing his own projects.

His directorial breakthrough came in 2013 with Honey Bee. Starring Asif Ali, Bhavana, Baburaj, Sreenath Bhasi and Balu Varghese, the film became a commercial success and established Jean Paul, who was credited as Lal Jr., as a promising new Malayalam filmmaker.

He followed it by directing Hi I’m Tony in 2014. The psychological thriller starred Asif Ali and Mia George and demonstrated Jean Paul‘s willingness to move beyond the youthful comedy-drama style of Honey Bee.

Jean Paul later directed Honey Bee 2: Celebrations in 2017, a sequel to his debut. He also worked as creative director on King Liar (2016), a Malayalam comedy starring Dileep and Madonna Sebastian.

In 2019, he directed Driving Licence, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Suraj Venjaramoodu. The film revolves around a superstar and a motor vehicle inspector whose conflict escalates after a dispute over the actor’s driving licence.

It became one of Jean Paul‘s important commercial successes and was later remade in Hindi as Selfiee.

Jean Paul subsequently directed Tsunami in 2021, a comedy-drama co-directed by his father Lal. The film marked another collaboration between father and son, with Jean Paul handling the directorial responsibilities alongside Lal.

In July 2026, Jean Paul spoke about Balan: The Boy and described the appreciation for his performance as particularly meaningful.

He also reflected on being the son of a well-known filmmaker, acknowledging the advantages and scrutiny associated with entering cinema as a “nepo kid.”

His 2026 acting credits also include Karakkam, in which he plays Jackson. The film is among his latest screen projects.

Jean Paul‘s career has consequently developed along two parallel paths. While directing remains a major part of his professional identity, his increasingly prominent acting roles have established him as a performer in his own right rather than solely as the son of Lal.

Personal life

Lal Jr. is divorced. He married Blessy Susan Varghese on December 26, 2013, following their engagement earlier that month.

The wedding took place at Vallarpadam Church in Kochi, followed by a reception at Bolgatty Palace. Contemporary reports described the marriage as an arranged marriage.

The marriage later ended in divorce in 2021. Jean Paul and Blessy have one son. Details about his son have largely been kept away from the public eye.

Jean Paul‘s family has remained an important part of his professional story. His father, Lal, is a prominent Malayalam actor and filmmaker, while his younger sister Monica is also part of the family’s creative background. His cousin Balu Varghese is an actor.

Despite being born into a film family, Jean Paul has emphasized that filmmaking was not his childhood ambition.

His early desire to become a pilot eventually gave way to cinema, and he built his career by obtaining formal filmmaking training and working his way into directing.

His career also reflects a gradual expansion from directing into acting. After establishing himself behind the camera, he began taking more substantial acting roles, particularly in Under World, Corona Papers, Manjummel Boys and Balan: The Boy.

His performance as Pavithran in Balan: The Boy has been particularly important in strengthening his reputation as an actor.

A signature part of his identity is his thick, full beard. Despite frequently receiving advice from peers to shave it off, he proudly keeps it as a hobby and a symbolic representation of his family’s lineage and heritage.

Lal Jr. has openly described himself as a massive Steven Spielberg fanboy. He credits Spielberg’s classic blockbusters and masterclasses in visual storytelling as the primary inspiration behind his decision to pursue filmmaking. Jean Paul Lal‘s height is 179 cm (5 ft 10).

Net worth

Lal Jr.‘s net worth is ₹15 Crore. His professional income comes from directing, acting, writing and producing Malayalam film projects.

His successful directorial films, particularly Honey Bee and Driving Licence, alongside his growing acting career, have established him as a multi-hyphenate figure in Malayalam cinema.
