Joey Lawrence was born on April 20, 1976, in Abington Township, Pennsylvania, United States. He is of Italian ancestry through his father and English and Scottish ancestry through his mother. He is the son of Joseph Lawrence Mignogna Jr., an insurance broker, and Donna Lynn Lawrence, a former elementary school teacher and personnel manager.
He grew up alongside his two younger brothers, Matthew Lawrence and Andrew Lawrence, both of whom also became actors. During his childhood, the family legally changed their surname from Mignogna to Lawrence to make it easier for audiences to pronounce.
He graduated from Abington Friends School in 1994 and later attended the University of Southern California. He practices Christianity.
