John Crowley was born on 1 December 1942 in Presque Isle, Maine, to Joseph B. Crowley, a physician who served with the Army Air Corps, Patience Lyon Crowley.
He was the second of five children, grew up alongside four sisters, including Jo Busha. His childhood took him through Vermont, northeastern Kentucky, Indiana as the family followed his father’s medical career.
At Indiana University, Crowley studied English, developed an early interest in poetry, theater, filmmaking, earning a bachelor’s degree in English in 1964 with a minor in film, photography.
After graduation, he moved to New York City with ambitions of making films, eventually working on documentary productions while writing screenplays, developing his fiction.
