Early Life

John Goodman, the talented actor, was born in Affton, Missouri. Unfortunately, his father, Leslie Francis Goodman, passed away from a heart attack when John was just two years old. His mother, Virginia Roos (née Loosmore), worked as a waitress at Jack and Phil’s Bar-B-Que and also held various other jobs such as retail store worker and taking in laundry to support the family. 

Despite facing these early challenges in life, Goodman grew up with an older brother named Leslie and a younger sister named Elisabeth, who was born shortly after their father’s death. Raised in the Southern Baptist faith, Goodman comes from a diverse background of English, German, and Welsh ancestry.

During his upbringing, John Goodman found solace and guidance in the Boy Scouts, which he believed provided him with the structure and companionship he longed for. He not only looked up to his Boy Scout leaders but also found father figures in them and in his acting coaches later on.

Goodman initially pledged to the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity while at the university but officially joined a few years later. During his time at university, he found a passion for the drama program, where he studied alongside future Hollywood stars Kathleen Turner and Tess Harper. 

In December 2013, Goodman said his school friends were his closest companions. He eventually graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1975, and in 2013, the university honored him with an honorary doctorate in humane letters.
