Born to Emilio Guzmán Bustillos and María Consuelo Loera PérezJoaquín’s family background can be traced back to Juan Guzmán and Otilia Bustillos on his father’s side and Ovidio Loera Cobret and Pomposa Pérez Uriarte on his mother’s side. His upbringing in a rural community shaped the man who would later become one of the most notorious drug lords in history.

For several centuries, his ancestors resided in La Tuna, with his father being recognized as a cattle rancher within the community where he spent his childhood.

Despite this official title, rumors suggest that his father may have also been involved in cultivating opium poppies. Raised alongside two younger sisters and four younger brothers, he also had three older brothers who tragically passed away from natural causes during his early years.

Education

There is little to no public record of Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera’s formal education or academic history.

It is widely believed that he began working in the drug trade at a young age and did not pursue traditional schooling. This lack of information adds to the mystery surrounding his life and criminal activities.

Career

Joaquín Guzmán Loera, known as “El Chapo,” rose to power as the leader of the notorious Sinaloa Cartel, a criminal organization known for its influence and reach in the drug trafficking world.

El Chapo’s notoriety stems from his adeptness at corrupting public officials, engaging in violent attacks against rival cartels, and ingeniously evading law enforcement while distributing his illicit drugs to consumers. His cunning tactics and strategic thinking have solidified his reputation as a legendary figure within the criminal underworld.

After being sentenced to a 20-year prison term, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman-Loera managed to escape from a federal maximum security prison in Jalisco, Mexico, on January 19, 2001. During his time on the run from Mexican authorities, he successfully reintegrated himself as a high-ranking member of the Sinaloa Cartel. He led the Mexican drug trade, earning himself the title of the world’s most wanted fugitive and landing a spot on Forbes’ billionaire list.

Eventually, on February 22, 2014, Guzman-Loera was apprehended at a modest resort hotel in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, as part of an extensive operation. However, his second escape occurred on July 11, 2015, from the Altiplano federal maximum security prison in Mexico.

Guzman-Loera, alongside his partner Ismael Zambada-Garcia, held significant authority within the Guzman-Loera drug trafficking organization (DTO), a division of the expansive Sinaloa Cartel. Together, they orchestrated widespread trafficking endeavors on a global level, primarily sending illicit substances to the United States.

The Sinaloa Cartel strategically conducts its operations primarily within Mexican states like Sinaloa, Sonora, Durango, and Baja California while maintaining a presence in numerous other regions across Mexico.

Apart from distributing drugs in the United States, the Guzman-Loera DTO is also responsible for transporting drug shipments to various countries across the globe, including Canada, Australia, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

This organization smuggles large quantities of cocaine from South America through Central America into Mexico. In addition to cocaine, they are also involved in manufacturing, transporting, and distributing methamphetamine and heroin.

The DTO operates multiple marijuana plantations in Sinaloa and nearby regions as well. To move their drug proceeds across the United States-Mexico border, the Sinaloa Cartel relies heavily on bulk currency shipments.

The legal pursuit of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman-Loera spans multiple jurisdictions in the United States, including the Southern District of California, the Western District of Texas, the Northern District of Illinois, the Eastern District of New York, and the Southern District of Florida.

The first indictment against Guzman-Loera was revealed in San Diego on September 28, 1995, where he and 22 associates were charged with conspiracy to smuggle over eight tons of cocaine and commit money laundering. Despite being a wanted fugitive in the U.S. and Mexico, there is an ongoing U.S. State Department reward offer amounting to $5 million for any information leading to his capture.

Personal Life

El Chapo Guzmán’s life was marked by tragedy when rival cartels killed his brother, son, and nephew. Despite the violence in his life, Guzmán found love and started a family with his wife, Alejandrina María Salazar Hernández, in a small ceremony in Sinaloa.

Together, they raised their four children: César, Ivan Archivaldo, Jesús Alfredo, and Alejandrina Gisselle, in a ranch home in Jesús María. El Chapo also fell in love with a bank clerk named Estela Peña, whom he later married after kidnapping her. His tumultuous personal life was intertwined with the dangerous world of cartel conflicts he navigated.

In 2010, López Pérez, the third wife of notorious drug lord Guzmán, was arrested in Culiacán due to her involvement in his criminal activities. Guzmán later married an 18-year-old American beauty queen named Emma Coronel Aispuro in 2007, who gave birth to twin girls in Los Angeles County Hospital in 2011. Recently, Emma Coronel Aispuro pleaded guilty to charges in the U.S., confessing that she assisted her husband in running his massive criminal empire worth billions of dollars.

In 2008, a Mexican federal judge named Jesús Guadalupe Luna made a controversial ruling stating that there was insufficient evidence to prove that a man’s cash was linked to drug activities despite being the son of a notorious drug lord. This decision raised suspicions of corruption, leading to Luna and another judge being suspended due to irregular judgments.

Tragedy struck the Guzmán family when Guzmán’s son, Édgar Guzmán López, was killed in an ambush at a shopping center parking lot in Culiacán, Sinaloa, in the same year. The crime scene was littered with over 500 AK-47 bullet casings, indicating the intensity of the attack. Additionally, Guzmán’s brother Arturo, also known as “El Pollo,”  had met a similar fate when he was killed in prison back in 2004.

According to sources, the woman who had a fraudulent visa was identified as the daughter of María Alejandrina Salazar Hernández. However, she did not hold a significant role within the cartel. She intended to travel to Los Angeles to reunite with the father of her child and give birth in the United States.

Tragically, on the night of June 17, 2012, Obied Cano Zepeda, a nephew of Guzmán’s, was fatally shot by unidentified attackers at his residence in Culiacán during a Father’s Day gathering. The assailants were said to be armed with AK-47 rifles and also killed two other attendees while leaving another in critical condition.

Net Worth

Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán, a notorious Mexican drug lord, was once estimated to have a net worth of $1 billion at the height of his criminal empire. His vast wealth was amassed through the trafficking of illegal drugs and other illicit activities, making him one of the wealthiest and most powerful figures in organized crime.

Despite his immense fortune, Guzmán’s reign as a kingpin came to an end when he was captured by authorities and sentenced to life in prison for his crimes.
