Knoxville, born Philip John Clapp, entered the world on March 11, 1971, in Knoxville, Tennessee. His parents were Lemoyne and Philip Clapp, and he grew up alongside two older sisters.

The singer-songwriter Roger Alan Wade, Knoxville’s cousin, introduced him to Jack Kerouac‘s On the Road, a moment that inspired his passion for acting.


Knoxville went to South-Young High School in Knoxville, now known as South-Doyle High School.

He was a baseball team member and received recognition as All-Knoxville Interscholastic League Honorable Mention.
