Jonathan Ajayi was born on 21 August 1996 in London, England, to Mr. and Mrs. Ajayi, and grew up in Chiswick, West London. He is of Nigerian heritage and was raised by his mother alongside two sisters.
His mother, who had once aspired to act, encouraged his creative interests. He received early mentorship from Royal Shakespeare Company actor Joseph Marcell.
Ajayi completed a one-year foundation course in acting at Arts Educational Schools (ArtsEd), graduating with distinction, before training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) on a full scholarship from The Clothworkers Foundation.

Jonathan Ajayi began his professional career while still training at LAMDA. In his final year, he took a leading role as Oshoosi Size in Tarell Alvin McCraney’s The Brothers Size at the Young Vic, directed by Bijan Sheibani, marking his professional stage debut and earning critical attention.
He made his screen breakthrough as Koffee in the 2019 romantic drama The Drifters. Television work followed with the role of Lieutenant Lekan Baako in the BBC series Noughts + Crosses (2020–2022).
He appeared in Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) and continued stage work, including Igwe in Three Sisters at the National Theatre and Laertes in Hamlet at the Young Vic, for which he received a commendation at the Ian Charleson Awards.
Subsequent television credits include a recurring role as Wes Harper in the second series of the thriller Vigil (2023). Film roles expanded with Lucky in 5lbs of Pressure (2024), Desmond Jackson in Chief of Station (2024), and Ricky in The Man in My Basement (2025). In 2025, he played Smee in the FX series Alien: Earth.
He has also contributed voice work and appeared in short films and experimental theatre, including Talking People at the Bush Theatre. In 2021, he was named one of Screen International’s Stars of Tomorrow.
