Early life and education
Kelly Asbury was born on January 15, 1960, in Beaumont, Texas. He was the son of Donald Leslie Asbury and Josephine Margaret Asbury. His sister was Gwendolyn Margaret Asbury-Speed.

Asbury developed a passion for drawing and animation during childhood and became determined to work for Walt Disney Studios as a teenager. He attended Lamar University for two years before transferring to the California Institute of the Arts in 1980, where he studied animation and filmmaking.

Kelly Asbury began his professional animation career at Walt Disney Feature Animation in 1983. He worked as a story artist and contributed to productions including The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, The Rescuers Down Under, Aladdin, and Toy Story.
He also served as assistant art director on The Nightmare Before Christmas. His work during Disney’s animation renaissance established him as a skilled storyboard artist and visual storyteller.
He later directed and co-wrote Gnomeo & Juliet, then directed Smurfs: The Lost Village and UglyDolls. Asbury also returned to Disney for story work on Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen. Beyond animation, he wrote and illustrated children’s books and authored Dummy Days, a book about famous ventriloquists. His final directing credit was UglyDolls in 2019.
