Ravindra Randeniya is now 80 and was born on June 5, 1945, in Dalugama, Kelaniya. He grew up as the second of six children in a devout Catholic family. His father, L. P. Pereraran, had a brass-hinge business, and his mother, Caroline Egodawatte, was a homemaker.

Growing up surrounded by paddy fields and streams deeply influenced his love for nature and literature. He received his early schooling at a local church school before attending St. Francis School, Dalugama, and then St. Benedict’s College, Colombo, where his interests shifted from his initial ambition of becoming a doctor to literature and the arts.

Although he did not pass his A‑levels and opted out of university studies, he joined his family’s hardware business. During his free time, he took theatre decor, screenwriting, and acting classes at Lionel Wendt Theatre Workshop under Dhamma Jagoda, and in 1969, he undertook a diploma before making his film debut.

Ravindra made his on‑screen debut in student theatre, starring in Mudu Puththu at age 25. His first film role came in Kalu Diya Dahara (1971), praised as a turning point in Sinhala cinema, and followed by Desa Nisa (1972), which launched him to fame.

During the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, he delivered a staggering range of performances: lover, tribal chief, murderer, farmer, mute, and cripple, including standout roles in Dadayama (1983), Maya (1984), Sandakada Pahana (1989), and Siri Medura (1989).
