Early Life & Education

On August 17, 1943, Robert De Niro was born in New York City, United States. His father, Robert De Niro Sr., was a poet, painter, and sculptor. Virginia Admiral, his mother, sold artwork as well.

His parents ran a salon in Greenwich Village that was popular with intellectuals and artists. When their kid was a young child, they got divorced. Robert De Niro was introverted and had a sickly appearance as he entered adolescence. He has a brother named John De Niro and a sister called Joan De Niro.

He was known as Bobby Milk in his upbringing’s ethnic neighborhood of Little Italy because of his pale complexion. At age ten, he played the cowardly lion in a local version of The Wizard of Oz in his first stage performance.

Through the sixth grade, Robert De Niro went to PS 41, a public primary school in Manhattan. At age 10, he made his theatrical debut at school as the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz, following his acting training at the Dramatic Workshop. He later attended the upper school of the Little Red School House, Elisabeth Irwin High School, for the seventh and eighth grades.

Robert De Niro was then admitted to the High School of Music and Art for the ninth grade, but he only spent a brief time there before transferring to IS 71, Charles Evans Hughes Junior High School, a public junior high school. He attended McBurney School and Rhodes Preparatory School for his high school education.

He discovered acting as a way to overcome his shyness and developed a passion for movies, so he quit high school at 16 to pursue acting. He pursued his acting education at HB Studio and Lee Strasberg‘s Actors Studio.

Robert De Niro also pursued a degree from the Stella Adler Conservatory, where he was introduced to the Stanislavski methods.

He was influenced by the acting of Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, James Dean, Greta Garbo, Geraldine Page, and Kim Stanley when he was a young actor.

Career

Robert De Niro‘s first paid role was when he was 16 years old, in a production of The Bear by Anton Chekhov. He was addicted. He dropped out of high school only a few credits shy of graduating, and under Lee Strasberg and Stella Adler, he learned Method acting. He played off-Broadway, at dinner theaters, touring shows, and sporadically in television commercials and short films for the following 14 years. His film career began under the direction of Brian De Palma.

The Wedding Party, Greetings, and Hi, Mom! are unnoticed, low-budget movies in which he cast the young New Yorker. Robert De Niro played the major part of a draft evader in the movie Greetings. Actress Shelley Winters soon adopted him as her own. She aided him in getting a role in the low-budget Bloody Mama movie directed by Roger Corman. He portrayed one of Ma Barker, the infamous serial killersons. Robert De Niro practiced an Arkansas dialect for weeks in the Ozark Mountains as part of his preparation.

After that, he acted in a number of critically panned movies like Jennifer on My Mind, Born to Win, and The Gang That Couldn’t Shoot Straight. Despite the film’s poor reviews, several critics began recognising his excellent performances. Robert De Niro, who was turning 30 at the time, eventually achieved global praise in 1973 with two outstanding performances. In Bang the Drum Slowly, he played a baseball player who was near death.

Robert De Niro wasn’t athletic and had never played baseball, but through relentless preparation, careful observation of real and fictional players, and reading about baseball. He created a convincing performance. Later that year, in Mean Streets, the first of many collaborations with director Martin Scorcese, a contemporary who also grew up on New York’s Lower East Side, Robert De Niro starred as a jittery, explosive teenage hoodlum. His acting was astonishingly genuine. According to biographer David Thomson, the image appeared as if a rogue had wandered off the streets and seemed to declare how out of conventional control he was.

Robert De Niro played the youthful Vito Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola‘s hugely successful The Godfather, Part II in 1974. He spent weeks studying the Sicilian dialect and trying to mimic Marlon Brando, who had portrayed the older Corleone in the first Godfather film in terms of accent and demeanor.

According to film critic Pauline KaelRobert De Niro is well suited to portray the youthful Brando because he possesses the physical daring, grace, and instinct necessary to succeed as an actor. He earned the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the ground-breaking portrayal, in which he used just 17 words of English. As Travis Bickle, the cab driver in Martin Scorsese‘s Taxi Driver from 1976, he continued to get praise from critics. Robert De Niro shed 35 pounds and frequently listened to a taped narration of the assassin Arthur Bremer‘s journals, who shot presidential candidate George Wallace in 1972, to prepare for the part.

He also obtained a temporary driver’s license and spent several weeks operating a cab in New York. The contentious movie was propelled by Robert De Niro‘s brave, unsettling performance. According to David Thomson, his refusal to oversimplify is what makes his acting brilliant. He never chooses a shaman or a sacred beast.

Long, isolated passages create a confessional atmosphere for the viewer. Robert De Niro improvised the scene in which he played with his gun and practiced his bravado in front of a mirror. He then tries out the iconic line, You talkin’ to me? The expression entered the common vernacular of the United States and has since come to symbolize white male wrath as well as a tired, won’t-take-it-anymore attitude.

Personal Life

In 1976, Robert De Niro wed the actress Diahnne Abbott. Their son Raphael De Niro, a former actor who works in real estate in New York, is their only child. Additionally, he adopted Drena De Niro, Diahnne Abbott‘s child from a previous union. In 1988, he and Diahnne Abbott were divorced. After that, he was romantically involved with model Toukie Smith from 1988 to 1996.

In vitro fertilization resulted in the conception of Robert De Niro‘s twin sons, Julian Henry De Niro and Aaron Kendrick De Niro, who were born in 1995 through a surrogate mother.

He wedded actress Grace Hightower in 1997. The couple separated in 1999 after the birth of their son, Elliot De Niro, in 1998. They renewed their vows in 2004, as the divorce was never fully resolved. Their daughter, Helen Grace De Niro, was born via surrogate in December 2011. At 15 Central Park West, he and Grace Hightower moved into a 6,000-square-foot, five-bedroom condo in 2014.

After four years, it was revealed that Robert De Niro and Grace Hightower had ended their 20-year marriage. Four grandchildren were born to Robert De Niro—one to his daughter Drena De Niro and three to his son Raphael De Niro.

In a fictitious divorce proceeding presided over by a Manhattan judge on April 19, 2021, Robert De Niro‘s attorney claimed that his client is working at an unsustainable rate to support Hightower and pay off all his past taxes.” Grace Hightower‘s attorney alleged that Robert De Niro had unfairly lowered the agreed-upon payments to her since the couple filed for divorce in 2018.
