Sönke Möhring was born on 12 October 1972 in Unna, North Rhine-Westphalia, and grew up in Herne in the Ruhr region.
He is the son of Heiko Möhring and Mrs. Möhring and has three siblings: actor Wotan Wilke Möhring, journalist and journalism professor Wiebke Möhring, and Hauke Möhring.
After training as a childcare worker from 1987 to 1989, he qualified as an advertising salesman between 1995 and 1997.
He also studied philosophy and psychology before pursuing acting, later attending a Method acting workshop with John Costopoulos in 2002.
