Mina Tander was born on December 4, 1979, in Cologne, West Germany. Her father was an Afghan journalist and writer who died when she was a child, while her mother was a German teacher.
She was raised in Cologne alongside her younger sister, Simin Tander, who later became an accomplished jazz singer and composer.
