Zheng Geping (born May 27th, 1964), also addressed as Tay Kok Peng, is a talented actor and TV personality from Singapore. He was thrust into the limelight in 1996 when he garnered the coveted best-supporting actor award at the Stars Awards ceremony. 

This accolade immediately established him as one of the most sought-after thespians in the realm of Chinese-language television during the latter part of the 20th century and the early years of the 21st. 

Before his sudden rise to fame, Zheng Geping had carved out a niche for himself by taking on a plethora of small yet impactful roles in various television dramas and sitcoms and showcasing his versatility by tackling supporting roles in a number of feature films.

Early Life

Edmund Tay Kok Peng, better known by his Chinese moniker Zheng Geping, was ushered into the world on May 27th, 1964, to parents of Chinese-Singaporean descent. He spent his formative years in Singapore, and not much is publicly known about his progenitors. 

However, Zheng Geping once penned a poignant and evocative message about his mother on the social media platform Facebook, expressing his deep admiration for her compassion and self-sacrificing nature. In the post, he effused, “My dear mother is always so kind-hearted and radiant! She consistently prioritizes the needs of her family above her own. I am truly unable to adequately articulate my gratitude towards her.”

Unfortunately, Zheng Geping‘s mother is no longer with us. In a past interview, he candidly spoke about a particular instance in his youth when his principal, in a fit of pique, physically chastised him for his obstinate behavior. 

The incident in question occurred when the principal entered the classroom and discovered a plethora of paper litter scattered about and, in a hasty assumption, blamed Zheng Geping for the mess. A heated exchange ensued, ultimately culminating in the principal administering a stinging slap as punishment for Zheng Geping‘s supposed transgression.

Personal Life

Zheng Geping is married to Hong Huifang, a MediaCorp actress and the mother of his two progeny, a son named Calvert Tay and a daughter named Tay Ying. In a recent social media post, Calvert Tay divulged that he and his sister are habitually showering their father with unexpected tokens of love and appreciation on Father’s Day. 

In an interview, Zheng Geping spoke with paternal pride about his son, saying, “I am elated to announce that my son is an individual of exceptional empathy and compassion. Despite his financial constraints while fulfilling his National Service duties, he still found the means to procure a pair of shoes for me as a gift, which I continue to wear to this day with great fondness.”

Career

Zheng Geping, a former chef and Taekwondo instructor, started working as a full-time actor in 1987 after finishing the SBC’s 7th Professional Drama Performers’ Training Course and had mostly played supporting roles. 

His efforts were rewarded when he was named Best Actor for his role in Like Father, Like Daughter at the 2007 Star Awards ceremony.

After winning Best Actor in 2007, Zheng Geping‘s popularity skyrocketed when he was named one of the Top 10 Most Popular Male Artists from 2009 to 2013. He bared his body at age 47, his solid new six-pack putting most men to shame.

In June 2013, Zheng Geping was appointed as the brand ambassador of a hair consulting company. He published Star Fitness in August 2013, which recounts his journey to health and fitness and includes exercises and tips on how to get a great body. These got his fans asking about his diet and the measurement he took to gain his body physique.
