Carol Alt entered the world on 1 December 1960 in Flushing, Queens, New York City. She is the daughter of Anthony Alt, a New York City fire chief and U.S. Army Reserve colonel, and Muriel Alt, a former model and airline employee.
She grew up as the third of four children alongside her older brother Anthony Ted Alt Jr., older sister Karen Alt Roos and younger sister Christine Alt, who also pursued modeling.
Alt attended Wheatley High School in Old Westbury, New York, before enrolling at Hofstra University on an ROTC scholarship.
