Early Life and Education
Danielle Louise Spencer was born on 24 June 1965 in Trenton, New Jersey, to James Spencer, a civil servant, and Cheryl (née Smith) Spencer, a schoolteacher.
She was raised primarily in the Bronx, New York, and considered her stepfather, actor Tim Pelt, a significant father figure. She has one brother, jazz trumpeter Jeremy Pelt.
Spencer began acting as a child and later pursued higher education, attending the University of California, Davis, and UCLA before earning a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Tuskegee University in 1993. She is African American and Christian.

Danielle Spencer rose to fame as a child actress when she was cast as Dee Thomas, the witty and often tattling younger sister, on the ABC sitcom What’s Happening!!, which aired from 1976 to 1979.
She appeared in the majority of the series’ episodes and became known for her catchphrase “Ooooh, I’m gonna tell Mama!”
She survived a serious car accident in 1977 that claimed the life of her stepfather and left her with lasting injuries, yet returned to the show. She later reprised the role in the sequel series What’s Happening Now!! from 1985 to 1988.
After stepping away from full-time acting, Spencer focused on her veterinary studies and career. She made a brief return to the screen in James L. Brooks’ film As Good as It Gets (1997), playing a veterinarian, and appeared in the short film Peter Rabbit and the Crucifix (2001).
She also had a guest role on Days of Our Lives. In later years, she practiced veterinary medicine, wrote a memoir titled Through the Fire: Journal of a Child Star, and remained an animal welfare advocate while occasionally reflecting on her early television success.
Personal Life
Danielle Spencer married Garry Fields, a marketing manager and her publicist, in 1999; the couple divorced in 2013. In 2014 she married entrepreneur David L. David. She had no children.
Spencer faced significant health challenges throughout her life, including the long-term effects of her 1977 car accident, a breast cancer diagnosis and double mastectomy in 2014, and later gastric cancer.
She died on 11 August 2025 at Chippenham Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, from gastric cancer and cardiac arrest at the age of 60. Her mother and brother survive her.
