Heather Joy (née Arrington), a college tennis star, and Steven J. Fanning, a minor league baseball player for the St. Louis Cardinals, welcomed Mary Elle Fanning into the world on April 9, 1998, in Conyers, Georgia.

American football player Rick Arrington was her maternal grandfather; ESPN reporter Jill Arrington is her aunt. One of the most important forefathers of the Arrington family was the gentleman farmer William Farrar.

Her older sister, Dakota Fanning, is also an actor. Both of them grew up in Southern Baptist churches.

When Elle Fanning was three years old, she started acting. She portrayed her older sister Dakota’s younger self in the movies I Am Sam and the miniseries Taken.
