Career
Emmy Laybourne began her creative career in theatre and comedy, writing and performing original material before moving into acting and screenwriting.
One of her early stage projects was The Miss Alphabet City Beauty Pageant and Spelling Bee, followed by the comedy production Smorgas-Bourne.
Her work in theatre helped lead to an acting opportunity in the 1999 comedy film Superstar, in which she played a close friend of Mary Katherine Gallagher.
She subsequently appeared in films including The In-Laws, Lucky Numbers, and Nancy Drew, while also performing original comedy on Comedy Central, MTV, and VH1.
She worked with improvisational groups including Chicago City Limits and the Upright Citizens Brigade, building experience across live performance, comedy, acting, and writing.
She also received early television experience through projects such as Ripe Tomatoes and The Assistants.
Emmy Laybourne developed her screenwriting ambitions more seriously after completing her MFA at UCLA in 2006.
Her screenplay Tulum earned the Eleanor Perry Award for Excellence in Screenwriting from Women in Film, marking an important achievement in her development as a writer.
After graduating, she began considering a professional screenwriting career but instead developed an idea that eventually became her breakthrough novel, Monument 14.
The novel, published in 2012, follows fourteen young people trapped inside a superstore after a series of catastrophic environmental and chemical disasters.
Its success led to two sequels, Sky on Fire and Savage Drift, forming the internationally best-selling Monument 14 trilogy, which has been translated into nine languages.
Sky on Fire also reached the YALSA Teens’ Top Ten, while Monument 14 received recognition from the New York Times Book Review and other literary organizations.
Emmy Laybourne continued expanding her literary and screenwriting portfolio with Sweet, which became one of her most decorated novels, receiving a Junior Library Guild Award, a YALSA Quick Pick selection, and the Eliot Rosewater Indiana High School Book Award.
She followed it with Berserker in 2017 and Ransacker in 2019, a historical-fantasy duology centered on Norwegian teenagers connected to an ancient Viking curse.
Both books have been developed for television, further connecting her publishing career with her earlier screenwriting ambitions.
Laybourne has also worked on live literary events, including Spine Out, and created the Workplace Comedy Podcast during the pandemic period with fellow actors and performers.
Her work continues to span novels, screenwriting, acting, comedy, television development, and other storytelling formats, giving her a career that bridges Hollywood and young-adult literature.
