Genelia Deshmukh was born on August 5, 1987, in Mumbai, India, into a Mangalorean Catholic family.
She is the daughter of Jeanette D’Souza, a former managing director at a pharmaceutical multinational corporation, and Neil D’Souza, a senior official at Tata Consultancy Services.
She grew up in the Bandra suburb of Mumbai with her younger brother, Nigel D’Souza. She completed her schooling at Apostolic Carmel High School in Bandra.
She later pursued a bachelor’s degree in Management Studies at St. Andrew’s College, which she completed while filming her debut movie. Her ethnicity is Mangalorean Catholic, and her religion is Christianity.

Genelia began her acting career after gaining attention in a Parker Pen commercial with Amitabh Bachchan.
