Julie Caitlin Brown was born on January 27, 1961, in San Francisco, California. Born Julie Caitlin Andrich, she is the second oldest of six children.
Her older brother is Stephen Andrich, a camera operator, and she has four younger sisters.
Brown developed an interest in performance early in life and began appearing professionally on stage. In 1983, she played Mary Magdalene in a professional production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
