Jonathan Mostow was born on November 28, 1961, in Woodbridge, Connecticut. His father, George Daniel Mostow, was a prominent mathematician, while his mother worked as a social worker.
He was raised in a Conservative Jewish household.
Mostow attended Harvard University, where he developed his interest in filmmaking. He also trained at the American Repertory Company and the Lee Strasberg Institute, strengthening his background in theatre and dramatic storytelling.
Career
Jonathan Mostow began making films at a young age and directed the horror-comedy Beverly Hills Bodysnatchers in 1989. He later directed the television film Flight of Black Angel before achieving his major breakthrough in 1997 when he directed and co-wrote the thriller Breakdown, starring Kurt Russell.
His career grew considerably after Breakdown. He directed the submarine war thriller U-571 in 2000, followed by Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines in 2003.
He later directed the science-fiction thriller Surrogates starring Bruce Willis in 2009 and The Hunter’s Prayer in 2017.
He has also worked as a producer on projects including The Game, Hancock and Playing for Keeps, while directing television episodes for From the Earth to the Moon, The Last Ship and Accused.
