Early life and education
Katy Sullivan was born on December 6, 1979, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, to Cornelius Sullivan, a doctor, and Barbara Sullivan, a microbiologist. She was born a bilateral above-knee amputee and grew up in Tuscaloosa alongside her two brothers, Patrick and Daniel, and her sister, Maureen.
Her parents encouraged her to explore different interests rather than allowing her disability to limit her ambitions. She developed an early passion for acting after seeing Annie and began performing in school theatre.
She also participated in gymnastics and singing during her childhood.
Sullivan attended Central High School in Tuscaloosa and graduated in 1998. She later studied acting at Webster University’s Conservatory of Theatre Arts in St. Louis, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2002.
Career
Katy Sullivan began pursuing acting seriously during her school years, performing in theatre productions and musical theatre. Her early stage experience included productions such as Anything Goes and Cabaret.
After graduating from Webster University with departmental honors, she received an internship at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, launching a professional theatre career that would eventually take her across the United States and internationally.
Her early stage credits included Hedda Gabler, A Caucasian Chalk Circle, Lady Windermere’s Fan, Wonder of the World, A Piece of My Heart and The Long Red Road. She also appeared in television productions including Nip/Tuck, My Name Is Earl and Dirt.
Sullivan gradually expanded her television work, appearing in I’m with Stupid, Last Man Standing, Legit and NCIS: New Orleans. She later appeared in Station 19 and played Esther in Dexter: New Blood, giving her a recurring television presence on Showtime.
Her defining theatrical achievement came from Cost of Living. Sullivan originated the role of Ani at the Williamstown Theatre Festival and later reprised the character in the Manhattan Theatre Club production.
The play won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, while Sullivan’s performance earned major critical recognition. She later took the production to Broadway in 2022.
Her Broadway appearance was historic because Sullivan became the first female amputee to perform on Broadway. Her performance also earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Play, making her the first female amputee nominated for a Tony Award.
Sullivan continued expanding her screen career, appearing in T-11 Incomplete, Saint Bernard, Annabelle: Creation and the animated series Not Quite Narwhal. In 2025, she joined the fourth season of HBO’s Hacks as Carla, bringing her work to a new generation of television viewers.
Alongside acting, Sullivan has worked as a producer and writer. She co-founded SulliFlinn Productions alongside fellow Webster graduate Becca Flinn White, developing short-form comedy and film projects.
She has also remained active in theatre, including major productions of Richard III and Hedda Gabler.
Sullivan’s athletic career has been equally impressive. After receiving running prosthetics in her mid-20s, she began competing seriously in track and field.
She became a four-time U.S. champion in the 100 metres and represented the United States at the 2012 London Paralympic Games. She set an American record of 17.33 seconds in the 100 metres and finished sixth in the world.
She has also represented the United States at international competitions and won gold in the 100 metres at the 2011 Parapan American Games.
