Early life and education
Kimee Balmilero was born on December 13, 1979, in Kāneʻohe, Hawaii. She is the daughter of Roy Balmilero and comes from a Filipino American family. Her father later appeared alongside her on Hawaii Five-0, playing her character’s father, Joseph Cunha.
Balmilero began performing at a young age under the guidance of Hawaii theatre director Ronald E. Bright. She graduated from James B. Castle High School in Kāneʻohe, where she developed her skills in theatre and performance. At 17, she left Hawaii to join the national touring company of Miss Saigon.
Career
Kimee Balmilero began her professional performing career in theatre before moving into television. After nearly three years touring Miss Saigon, she studied at Studio A.C.T. in San Francisco before moving to New York. In 2001, she made her Broadway debut as part of the original cast of Mamma Mia!
In 2003, she joined the children’s musical television series Hi-5, gaining national exposure. She later moved into comedy and screen acting, appearing in projects such as Brown Soup Thing, Pretty Little Liars and Hawaii Five-0.
Her recurring role as medical examiner Dr. Noelani Cunha became one of her most recognizable performances, and she reprised the character on Magnum P.I.
Balmilero has also built a career behind the scenes. She founded Improv Hawaii, created the Hawaii Comedy Festival, launched Stage Fish theatre company and co-founded Tiny Stage Hawaii alongside her husband, John LeBlanc. She continues to develop comedy, theatre and television projects in Hawaii.
