Christina Ann McNichol (born 11 September 1962), also addressed as Kristy McNichol, is a talented American actress, comedian, producer, and singer. She is best known for appearing in the films Only When I Laugh and Little Darlings, as well as television shows like Family. She was raised in Los Angeles, California, and started modelling as a young child. 

She and her brother both made numerous TV commercial appearances. In 1973, she finally made her acting debut on television with a small part in the sitcom Love, American Style. When she started starring as Buddy Lawrence, one of the principal parts in the well-known drama series Family, she received her big break. In the late 1970s, her performance earned her two Emmy Awards.

Kristy McNichol also shared screen time with her brother Jimmy McNichol in a handful of her early advertisements. During their formative years, their mother served as their manager. 

Although she enjoyed singing as well, acting remained her top priority. She quickly made the decision to go to TV and movie auditions. She had already appeared on television at the age of eleven.

Early Life

Daughter of James McNichol and Carolyn McNicholKristy McNichol was born in Los Angeles, California, United States, on September 11, 1962. 

Her mother, Carolyn McNichol Lucas, had worked odd jobs to support the family, including as a secretary, cosmetics salesperson, and movie extra. 

Her father, James McNichol, was a carpenter. Kristy McNichol‘s father is Scottish/Irish, and her mother is Lebanese.

Her siblings are Jimmy McNichol, Jennifer Lucas, and Thomas McNichol.

Career

Kristy McNichol made her television debut in 1973 with the little part of Steffi in the Love, American Style episode titled Love and the Unsteady Steady. At the moment, she was 11 years old. The year after, she starred as Patricia Apple, a supporting character, in the television series Apple’s Way. In 15 episodes of the show, she portrayed the character. 

She then appeared in guest spots on television shows like The Bionic Woman, Sara, and ABC Afterschool Special. In 1976, she made her first significant professional break when she was cast as Letitia Buddy Lawrence in the family drama Family. She portrayed the series’ central family’s younger daughter. 

For the first time in her career, Kristy McNichol‘s performance got acclaim from everyone. The show garnered numerous Primetime Emmy Awards. For Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, she received two Emmy Awards. For her performance, she was also nominated for a Golden Globe.

In the late 1970s, her TV career was booming, but her early cinema roles weren’t all that impressive. Kristy McNichol‘s sequences were cut from the final edit of the 1977 picture Black Sunday, which was scheduled to be her debut film. In 1978’s The End, she eventually made her acting debut in a supporting role.

In the 1980 movie Little Darlings, she had her first major leading role. The teen comedy-drama was a commercial and critical success. Kristy McNichol portrayed Polly Hines in the comedy-drama movie Only When I Laugh in 1981. Although the movie received mixed reviews from critics, everyone who saw it praised the actors’ performances. 

Kristy McNichol received a Golden Globe Award nomination for her work in the lead role. With the 1982 release of the movie White Dog, in which she played a struggling actor, the enormous critical acclaim persisted. However, the American media attacked the movie, which implied that it was a racist movie. 

The Australian movie The Pirate Movie, which was released that year, featured her in yet another leading role. Although the movie debuted with negative reviews, it later gained a positive reputation. Kristy McNichol played the lead in the comedy-drama Just the Way You Are in 1984. She had mental health difficulties; therefore, the shooting was stopped. 

She made appearances in movies like Dream Lover, Two Moon Junction, and Baby of the Bride in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The television show Empty Nest featured her in 100 episodes. In 1998, she made her only on-screen appearance to date, showing up in 13 episodes of the show Invasion America.

Kristy McNichol provided the voice for The Princess in the 1982 movie Aladdin and the Magic Lamp. She served as the assistant producer for the 1989 short film Dirty Tennis and co-produced the 1993 television feature Mother of the Bride.

Kristy McNichol provided songs for The Pirate Movie, Only When I Laugh, and The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia soundtracks. 

Personal Life

Bipolar disorder was discovered amid the height of Kristy McNichol‘s acting career. She had mental health concerns throughout the 1990s, and in 2001 she formally ended her acting career. 

She once said that being a working actor since she was a young child was the main cause of most of her psychiatric problems.



In 2012, Kristy McNichol revealed she was a lesbian during an interview. She admitted that during the 1990s, she had been residing with her partner, Martie Allen

She claimed that she decided to come out of the closet to inspire individuals who are victimized because of their sexuality.
