Lisa Loeb was born on March 11, 1968, in Bethesda, Maryland, to Peter Mayer Loeb and Barbara Gail Loeb.
She spent her childhood in Dallas, Texas, alongside her three siblings, Benjamin Loeb, Debbie Loeb, and Philip Loeb.
Her father worked as a gastroenterologist, while her mother became involved in the Dallas County Medical Society Alliance and Foundation. She is of White American ethnicity and was raised in a Jewish family.
As a child, she studied piano before moving to guitar and developed an early interest in songwriting and broadcasting. She later moved into New York’s singer-songwriter scene, where she performed acoustic music and developed the collection of songs that became known as The Purple Tape.

Lisa Loeb began developing her musical career during her school and university years, performing in bands and writing songs before establishing herself as a solo artist.
At Brown University, she formed the duo Liz and Lisa alongside Elizabeth Mitchell and also performed alongside fellow student Duncan Sheik. After moving to New York, she recorded early independent material and formed Lisa Loeb and Nine Stories.
Her major breakthrough came in the early 1990s when she recorded Stay (I Missed You). Actor Ethan Hawke, who lived near Loeb in New York and knew her through mutual friends, gave a recording of the song to Reality Bites director Ben Stiller.
The song was subsequently used in the 1994 film and became a major international hit.
Lisa‘s Stay (I Missed You) reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and made Loeb the first unsigned artist to achieve a U.S. No. 1 single.
Her breakthrough led to a recording contract and the release of Tails in 1995. The album became a commercial success and was certified gold, while the single Do You Sleep? reached the Top 20.
Her 1997 album Firecracker produced another Top 20 hit, I Do, and was also certified gold.
