Ian Donald Calvin Euclid Zappa was born on September 5, 1969, in Los Angeles, California, to legendary musician Mr. Frank Vincent Zappa and Mrs. Adelaide Gail Sloatman Zappa.
He is the second of four children, following Moon Unit and preceding Ahmet and Diva. His father was of Sicilian, Greek, Arab, and French ancestry, while his mother had German and Portuguese roots.
Dweezil received his first guitar from his father at six and developed a serious interest in the instrument at 12.
Career
Dweezil Zappa began his professional music career as a teenager, releasing the single My Mother Is a Space Cadet in 1982, produced by Eddie Van Halen.
He released his debut album, Havin’ a Bad Day, in 1986 and later formed the band Z with his brother Ahmet.
Alongside his music career, he worked as an MTV VJ and actor, appearing in The Running Man, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Pretty in Pink, Jack Frost, and Duckman.
In 2006, he launched Zappa Plays Zappa, a touring project dedicated to performing his father’s compositions. The project earned him a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for “Peaches en Regalia” in 2009.
