Rati Agnihotri was born on December 10, 1960, in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, India. She is the daughter of Roopkishen Agnihotri, Radhika Agnihotri. She was born into a conservative Punjabi family and later moved with her family to Madras, now Chennai, when she was a teenager because of her father’s work.
Her ethnicity is Punjabi, and she has an older sister, Anita Agnihotri, as well as an older brother. Her religion is Hinduism. She attended Good Shepherd’s Convent School in Chennai, where she also participated in a school play.
Career
Rati Agnihotri began her professional acting career in 1979 with the Tamil films Puthiya Vaarpugal and Niram Maaratha Pookkal. Her debut was an immediate success, and she quickly became one of the prominent young actresses in South Indian cinema.
Her Hindi-film breakthrough came with Ek Duuje Ke Liye in 1981, opposite Kamal Haasan. The film became one of the major Hindi hits of the year and earned Agnihotri her first Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actress. She followed it with films including Shaukeen, Farz Aur Kanoon, Coolie, Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye and Tawaif.
After marrying Anil Virwani in 1985 and having her son, Tanuj, she stepped away from films for approximately 16 years. She returned to acting in 2001 with Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi and Majunu. She subsequently appeared in Yaadein, Dev, Kranti, Na Tum Jaano Na Hum, Kaante, Chupke Se, Anyar, Krishna Cottage, Hum Tum, Kyun…! Ho Gaya Na, and Dil Ne Jise Apna Kahaa.
