She is best known for her role as Beverly Marsh in the 2017 film adaptation of Stephen King‘s It and her roles in the films Sharp Objects and Gretel & Hansel.

Sophia Lillis was born in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, New York, United States, on February 13, 2002. She is of Irish and Italian descent. 

She has a twin brother named Jake Lillis. Her mother, Juliana Lillis, wedded Christopher Mellevold, a photographer and independent filmmaker, after she divorced her father, David Lillis. 

Her stepfather encouraged her to apply to the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in Manhattan for acting classes. 

While Sophia Lillis was a student, a lecturer recommended her for a role in an NYU student film. She began acting in community theater productions when she was eight years old.

Sophia Lillis has been in a relationship with Jaeden Martell, her co-star in the film “It,” since 2017. The two have been seen together on several occasions and appear very happy.

In 2016, Sophia Lillis made her acting debut in the movie 37. She previously played a supporting role in Julie Taymor‘s theatrical adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, which was also taped for live performances.

She rose to fame in 2017 after collaborating with Stephen King on the horror film “It,” where she played the role of Beverly Marsh, one of the leading characters. 

The movie “It” was also spearheaded by Andy Muschietti and starred Jaeden Martell, Finn Wolfhard, Wyatt Oleff, Bill Skarsgard, Jack Dylan Grazer, Jeremy Ray Taylor, and Chosen Jacobs. Later that year, Sophia Lillis appeared in Sia‘s Santa’s Coming for Us music video as one of Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard‘s children.

In the HBO television miniseries Sharp Objects in 2018, Sophia Lillis appeared as a younger version of the adult Camille Preaker that Amy Adams played. 

In the 2019 Warner Bros. movie adaption of Nancy Drew and The Hidden Staircase, Sophia Lillis played the role of the young detective called Nancy Drew. Her performance was singled out for praise. Later in 2019, she reprised her role as Beverly Marsh in It: Chapter Two.

Sophia Lillis played Gretel in Gretel & Hansel, a retelling of the German fairy tale Hansel and Gretel, which was released in 2020.
