Andrij Parekh was born on 20 September 1971 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to parents Pravin Parekh, of Gujarati Indian origin, and Lesya Parekh, who is of Ukrainian descent and was born in a German labor camp during World War II.

He has a brother named Marko. Raised primarily in the Minneapolis suburbs of Minnesota, including areas such as Wayzata and Plymouth, he was immersed in Ukrainian culture through weekend school and family traditions.

He attended The Blake School for high school. Parekh graduated from Carleton College in 1995 with a degree in sociology/anthropology and a minor in media studies.
