Career
Craig Brewer began his career creating and staging original plays with strong support from his parents, who often financed and presented his early theatrical work. After high school he taught drama and continued writing and directing.
In the mid-1990s he moved to Memphis, Tennessee, with his wife, where he worked odd jobs while developing his first feature film. Shot on a tiny budget in black-and-white, The Poor & Hungry (2000) premiered at Indie Memphis and attracted the attention of filmmaker John Singleton.
Singleton financed Brewer‘s breakthrough film Hustle & Flow (2005), which premiered at Sundance, won the Audience Award, and achieved commercial and critical success, including an Oscar for Best Original Song.
He followed it with Black Snake Moan (2006), starring Samuel L. Jackson and Christina Ricci. Brewer then directed the 2011 remake of Footloose and later returned to independent spirit with Dolemite Is My Name (2019), a critically praised biopic starring Eddie Murphy. He also directed the sequel Coming 2 America (2021).
In recent years Brewer has continued directing both film and television, including episodes of Empire, The Shield, and the miniseries Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist. His 2025 film Song Sung Blue, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, marks another major studio project.
