Genki Kawamura was born on March 12, 1979, in Yokohama, Japan. His father, Ryuichi Kawamura, worked in the Japanese film industry, including at Nikkatsu, and later became a university lecturer and company executive. His mother is a Christian who introduced him to the Bible during his childhood.
Kawamura grew up alongside his younger brother, Yuuki Kawamura. He attended Yokohama Municipal Kanazawa High School before studying journalism at Sophia University, graduating from the Faculty of Humanities in 2001.
Career
Genki Kawamura joined Toho in 2001 and began working in film production. He produced major Japanese films including Train Man, Confessions, Villain, Parasyte, Your Name., Weathering with You, Suzume and Monster. His work on Your Name. helped turn the animated film into a worldwide success.
Kawamura expanded into directing and screenwriting. His short film Duality competed at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018. He made his feature directorial debut with A Hundred Flowers in 2022 and became the first Japanese filmmaker to win the Silver Shell for Best Director at the San Sebastián International Film Festival. He followed it by directing Exit 8, which premiered at Cannes in 2025 and received international theatrical distribution.
He is also a bestselling novelist. His debut novel, If Cats Disappeared from the World, was published in 2012 and became an international bestseller.
