Hunter Foster was born on June 25, 1969, in Lumberton, North Carolina, to parents Bob Foster and Helen Foster. He is the older brother of actress Sutton Foster.

He later appeared as Leo Bloom in The Producers and continued working in major productions including Million Dollar Quartet, Hands on a Hardbody, and The Bridges of Madison County.

Beyond performing, Foster has written the book for the musical Summer of ’42 (2004) and adapted and directed Clue: On Stage, which has become one of the most frequently produced plays in the United States.

He has directed numerous regional productions at venues such as the Bucks County Playhouse and Ogunquit Playhouse.
