Michael Dante DiMartino was born on July 18, 1974, in Shelburne, Vermont, USA. He is the son of Dante DiMartino and Alyce DiMartino.
He later attended the Rhode Island School of Design, where he studied animation and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1996. At RISD, he met Bryan Konietzko, who became his longtime creative collaborator.
Career
Michael Dante DiMartino began his professional animation career during the 1990s, eventually joining Film Roman, where he worked as a director and storyboard artist on productions such as King of the Hill, Family Guy, and Mission Hill.
He also created the animated short Atomic Love, which screened at festivals including Sundance and the Los Angeles Film Festival. His defining career achievement came when he and Bryan Konietzko developed Avatar: The Last Airbender, which premiered on Nickelodeon in 2005.
DiMartino served as co-creator, executive producer, director, writer, and story editor. The series became an international success and led to The Legend of Korra, which ran from 2012 to 2014.
Michael Dante DiMartino subsequently expanded the Avatar universe into graphic novels and other media, while also becoming an author. His Rebel Genius fantasy novel series began in 2016, and he later created the Audible fiction podcast Sundown: A Time Capsule Society Mystery.
In 2021, he returned to Nickelodeon as part of the leadership of Avatar Studios, helping develop new animated stories in the franchise. His current projects include Avatar: Aang: The Last Airbender and the upcoming animated series Avatar: Seven Havens.
