The family returned to Israel when Tom was five and a half years old. She studied film at the Tel Aviv School of Arts and later at Thelma Yellin High School, where she majored in film and created four short films.
She served at the Army Radio Station during her military service, studied History at Tel Aviv University, and graduated from the Jerusalem Sam Spiegel Film and Television School with a major in Screenwriting. She is of Jewish origin, and her religion is Judaism.
Career
Tom Nesher began her creative journey early, appearing in small roles in her father’s films as a child, including Ha-Sodot (2007). She directed her first short film at age 12 and participated in a children’s film festival at 15.
After her military service and university studies, she worked as a journalist and news anchor for Channel 13 News, producing dozens of documentary pieces during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, she wrote and directed the short film And Now Shut Your Eyes, which screened at the Jerusalem Film Festival and the Rome International Film Festival.
She also worked as second-unit director on her father’s 2021 film Image of Victory.
Nesher’s feature debut, Come Closer, premiered at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival in the Viewpoints competition, where it won the Viewpoints Award for bold and exceptional voices in independent cinema.
The film, which she wrote and directed, draws loosely on her own experience of losing her brother, telling the story of Eden, a young woman who discovers her deceased brother had a secret girlfriend and becomes obsessively drawn into the girlfriend’s world.
Come Closer went on to win four Ophir Awards including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Editing, and was selected as Israel’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.
