Danis Goulet was born in La Ronge, Canada, on April 7, 1977. Keith Napoleon Goulet, her father, was an MLA and a fluent Nehinuwehin (Cree) speaker who grew up in the Cree village of Cumberland House, trapping, hunting, fishing, and gathering. 

Linda May Hemingway, Danis‘ mother, held a position in the education department at First Nations University.

One of her siblings is named Tamar Goulet. Before studying at Toronto’s Canadian Film Centre, Danis Goulet took Winnipeg’s National Screen Institute filmmaking class.

Career

Beginning her journey in the film industry in 1998, Danis Goulet started as an extra on a CBC miniseries portraying Chief Big Bear’s life. Her passion for filmmaking blossomed, leading her to attend a filmmaking workshop in New York, where she crafted her debut short film.

Recognizing her talent, she directed Spin in 2004, earning acclaim at the Canadian Aboriginal Film Festival by clinching the prestigious Special Jury Award for Best Short Film.

Throughout the 2000s, Danis Goulet remained active in the film industry, directing various short films and documentaries such as Divided by Zero (2006), Wapawekka (2010), Barefoot (2012), and Wakening (2013). Additionally, in 2013, she contributed to a report for Telefilm Canada addressing the insufficient production of Indigenous feature films within the country.

Her directorial debut feature film, Night Raiders, premiered at the 2021 Berlinale in the Panorama section and was selected as a Gala Presentation at TIFF 2021. The film centers on a Cree mother’s extraordinary efforts to rescue her daughter from a government boarding school.

Night Raiders garnered widespread critical acclaim and numerous accolades, including the prestigious Grand Prix at the Festival du nouveau cinéma de Montréal and the Discovery Award from the Directors Guild of Canada.
