Eli Grier Hayes was born on November 5, 1993, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
He developed a passion for cinema at a young age after discovering the works of filmmakers such as James Benning and Chantal Akerman.
While in high school, he began writing screenplays and directed his first short films, The Life That Follows and Nobody.
He later attended Ithaca College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Abnormal Psychology with a minor in Creative Writing.
During his studies, he founded Hazel Eye Productions. He later completed a Master’s degree in Film and Creative Media at Lipscomb University in 2017.
Career
Eli Grier Hayes built an impressive independent filmmaking career, directing, producing, editing, and writing more than 25 feature films and approximately 50 short films.
His work was showcased at prestigious festivals, including the Beijing International Short Film Festival, Phoenix Film Festival Melbourne, Pune Short Film Festival, and the Cannes International Film Festival – Court Métrage. His films were also screened at venues such as Anthology Film Archives.
Following his graduation from Lipscomb University, Hayes became the Project Manager at the Nashville Film Institute.
He later returned to Milwaukee, where he continued developing feature films and short projects.
Widely admired within the independent film community, he was also known for his thoughtful film criticism and extensive reviews on Letterboxd, inspiring thousands of cinema enthusiasts. He died on May 23, 2020, from an accidental overdose at the age of 26.
