In 1980 he formed the Gaither Vocal Band, which became one of the most successful male gospel quartets, winning multiple Dove Awards and releasing dozens of albums with changing lineups that included artists like Gary McSpadden, Steve Green, and later Wes Hampton, David Phelps, and others.
His songwriting partnership with Gloria produced many standards still sung in churches today.
The couple also launched the Gaither Homecoming series in 1991, a collection of live videos and concerts featuring top gospel artists that introduced Southern gospel to new generations and spawned hundreds of recordings.
Bill Gaither has received numerous honors, including induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, multiple Dove Awards, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement recognition.
