Early Life & Education

Chanté Moore, who turned 56 in 2023, was born in San Francisco, California, on February 17, 1967. She is the daughter of Virginia Moore, a gospel singer, and Larry Moore, a minister.

She has a brother, Kelvin Gomillion, and a sister, LaTendre Moore. She grew up singing in the church and was heavily influenced by the music of George Duke and Lee Ritenour.

She attended El Camino High School in South San Francisco and was involved in the choir, drama club, and track team.

She graduated in 1985 and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a music career.

Personal Life

Chanté Moore has been married twice and has two children. She married actor Kadeem Hardison, best known for his role as Dwayne Wayne on The Cosby Show spin-off A Different World, in 1997.

They had a daughter, Sophia Hardison, in 1996. However, their marriage ended in divorce in 2000.

She then married singer Kenny Lattimore, whom she met at a music festival 1999. They had a son, Kenny Lattimore Jr., in 2003.

Career

Chanté Moore began her music career at 19 when talent manager Benny Medina signed her to Warner Bros Records.

While she recorded an album titled Listen to My Song for the label, the project was shelved late into the production, and Moore was eventually dropped.

In February 1991, she signed with MCA Records executive Louis Silas, Jr.’s newly founded Silas Records, a joint venture with MCA, after A&R director Madeleine Randolph had presented him several demos from her Listen to My Song sessions. Her debut studio album, Precious, was released in 1992.

The album was certified gold by the RIAA on November 14, 1994, in the United States, spawning such R&B hits as “Love’s Taken Over” and “It’s Alright”. She also won the Soul Train Music Award for Best New Artist in 1993.

Released in 1994, her second album, A Love Supreme, did not achieve the same success as her debut album. However, it featured the popular single “Old School Lovin’“, which earned her a nomination for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Female Artist in 1995.

She collaborated with other artists, such as Babyface, Boyz II Men, and Johnny Gill, on various soundtracks and projects.

In 1996, she released a cover version of “Wey U“, originally by Ofra Haza, for the soundtrack of the film The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Critics and fans praised the song, and it became one of her signature songs.



In 1999, her third album, This Moment Is Mine, was released. The album included “Chanté’s Got a Man“, her first top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 2 on the R&B chart, which became her signature and best charting song.

The song was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 2000. She also released another successful single, “I See You in a Different Light”, a duet with Keith Washington, for the soundtrack of the film Why Do Fools Fall in Love.
