Daddy Lumba, who turned 59 in 2023, was born on September 29, 1964, in a village called Nsuta Amangoase in the Sekyere Central District, near Mampong, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

He was the only child of his parents, who were both teachers. His father, Owoahene Kwadwo Fosuh, died when Lumba was only a child, leaving him under the care of his mother, Comfort Gyamfi, popularly known as Ama Saah.

She was also a teacher and a devout Christian who instilled in Lumba a love for gospel music. She died in 2001 in Kumasi, which was a devastating blow to Lumba as she was everything to him.

In addition to being the only one of his parents, he has a half-brother named Ernest “Owoahene” Nana Acheampong from his father’s side.

Lumba attended Juaben Senior High School from 1983 to 1985, where he led the school choir. He formed his first musical group, Lumba Brothers, with his friends Yaw and Kwabena and his girlfriend, Theresa Abebrese.

They performed at school events and local shows, gaining some popularity. After completing his secondary education, Lumba travelled to Germany with the help of Theresa, who was already living there, to seek greener pastures.

Personal Life

Daddy Lumba married his longtime girlfriend, Theresa Abebrese, in 1989 in Germany. They had four children together, but their marriage ended in divorce in 1999.

Lumba then married Akosua Serwaa, a Ghanaian woman based in Germany. They have nine children together and are still married.

Lumba has a total of 13 children, seven sons and six daughters, who are mostly based in Germany and Ghana. He is a devoted father who loves his children and supports their education and careers.

Lumba is also a philanthropist who has donated to various causes, such as building a school for his hometown, supporting orphanages, and sponsoring surgeries for needy patients.

He is a Christian who believes in God and prays regularly. He is also a football fan and supports Asante Kotoko, a Ghanaian club.

Career

Daddy Lumba’s music career started in Germany, where he met Ernest Nana Acheampong, another Ghanaian musician who had formed a group called Talking Dreams with a white man.

Nana Acheampong introduced Lumba to highlife music, which was different from the gospel music that Lumba was used to.

They formed a new group, also called Lumba Brothers, and released their first album, Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu 1989.

The album hit Ghana and established them as a successful duo. They released four more albums together, including Obi Ate Meso Buo, Sika Asem, Odo Foforo, and Biribi Gyegye Wo, before going solo in 1993.

Lumba then embarked on a solo career that saw him release 29 more albums, making him one of Ghana’s most prolific and versatile artists.

His albums include Aben Wo Aha, Awosoc, Obi Ate Me So Buo, Sika Asem, Odo Beba Na Mawu, Ebi Se Eye Aduro, Aben Wa Ha, and A,depa.

His songs span various genres, such as highlife, hiplife, gospel, reggae, and Afro-pop. He has collaborated with many artists, such as Ofori Amponsah, Pat Thomas, Borax, Sarkodie, Shatta Wale, and Kwabena Kwabena.

He has mentored many young musicians, such as Ofori Amponsah, Kofi Nti, and Kwame Anokye.

Lumba has won many awards and accolades for his music, such as the National Honours Award from the President of Ghana in 2008, the Artiste of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards in 1999 and 2015, the Album of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards in 1999 and 2015, the Song of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards in 2015, the Best Male Vocalist at the Ghana Music Awards in 2009, the Best Highlife Artiste at the Ghana Music Awards UK in 2017, and the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Ghana Music Awards UK in 2018.

Controversy

Daddy Lumba has been involved in some controversies and scandals throughout his career. Some of them are:

In 2014, he sued a young musician called Daddy Lumba Junior, who claimed to be his son and imitated his style and voice.

Lumba accused him of impersonation and infringement of his intellectual property rights. The case was settled out of court in 2018, with Lumba Junior agreeing to change his name to Anokye Supremo and apologizing to Lumba.

Unfortunately, Anokye Supremo died in 2019 from a brain tumour.

In 2015, he released a song called Yentie Obiaa, which was interpreted by some as a political endorsement of the then-president of Ghana, John Mahama, who used the phrase as his slogan.

Lumba denied any political affiliation and said the song was meant for everyone who works hard and does not listen to naysayers. He also said the president or his party did not pay him to compose the song.

In 2017, he was accused of using juju (black magic) to kill his colleague and friend, Nana Acheampong, who was reportedly ill and hospitalized.

Lumba dismissed the allegation as baseless and malicious and said he had no reason to harm Nana Acheampong, whom he considered a brother. He also visited him at the hospital and prayed for his recovery.

In 2018, he was sued by a Ghanaian woman called Mary Acheampong, who claimed to be his wife and demanded a divorce and a share of his properties. She alleged that Lumba had abandoned her and their four children in Germany and married another woman in Ghana.

Lumba denied ever marrying her and said she was only his girlfriend and the mother of his children. He also said he had supported her and their children financially and emotionally. The case is still pending in court.
