Early Life And Education
Hermann Hesse was born on July 2, 1877, in Calw, Germany, to missionary parents Johannes Hesse and Marie Gundert, both from families with strong Protestant traditions.
He grew up with five siblings in a deeply religious atmosphere. His ethnicity was German-Swiss. The family lived in Basel, Switzerland, from 1881 to 1886, shaping his early years.
Rebelling against strict religious schooling, he suffered a breakdown at 15, attempted suicide, and fled the Maulbronn seminary. He apprenticed as a bookseller in Tübingen and Calw (1895–1899), self-educating through philosophy and world literature while writing poetry.
Career
Hesse published his first poems in 1896 and his breakthrough novel, Peter Camenzind (1904), then quit bookselling to write full-time. Iconic works include Demian (1919), Siddhartha (1922), Steppenwolf (1927), and The Glass Bead Game (1943)—the latter securing the 1946 Nobel Prize.
He became a Swiss citizen in 1924 and lived reclusively in Montagnola, Ticino, until his death. Banned by the Nazis, his books exploded globally in the 1960s counterculture movement.

Hermann Hesse married three times and had three sons with his first wife, Maria Bernoulli. He battled lifelong depression, underwent Jungian analysis, and made several suicide attempts.
From 1919 onward, he lived quietly in southern Switzerland, painting watercolours, gardening, and corresponding with intellectuals worldwide. He died peacefully of a cerebral hemorrhage on August 9, 1962, and is buried in Sant’Abbondio, Collina d’Oro. His height was 177 centimetres.
Net Worth
Modest at his death, Hesse’s estate has grown through ongoing royalties—especially from Siddhartha (over 50 million copies sold)—to an inflation-adjusted value of $5 million to $10 million today.
