Early Life

Khruangbin’s three members’ early lives are all intertwined. Mark Speer and Donald Johnson met in Houston in 2004 while performing in Rudy Rasmus’ St. John’s Methodist Church gospel band.

 Speer met Laura Lee through friends in 2007, when they first connected over a love of Afghan music and Middle Eastern architecture. Lee began learning the bass with Speer’s help in 2009. After six months of playing, she auditioned for and was hired as the bassist for Yppah‘s upcoming tour.

Career

The Universe Smiles Upon You, Khruangbin’s debut album, was released in 2015. The album was a critical success, and it helped the band gain a wider audience. They then released the albums Con Todo El Mundo (2018) and Mordechai (2020), which were both well-received.

Khruangbin was named The Guardian’s “New Band of the Week” shortly after, opening for acts such as Father John Misty, Tycho, Chicano Batman, and Massive Attack. They also began performing at festivals such as Lockn, Glastonbury, Bonnaroo, ACL, Outside Lands, Desert Daze, and South by Southwest.

For the 2017 compilation Philia: Artists Rise Against Islamophobia, the group covered the well-known Iranian singer Googoosh’s song “Ma Beham Nemiresim.”

 As part of their AirKhruang DJ series, they also made a Spotify playlist specifically for Tehran and many other city-specific playlists.
