While her mother and extended family opposed her involvement in music, her father eventually became her strongest supporter.
To protect her and provide educational opportunities, she was sent at the age of nine to the Afghan Child Education and Care Organization (AFCECO) orphanage in Kabul. There, her musical talent became evident, and at the age of 13 she was selected to study at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, founded by Dr. Ahmad Naser Sarmast.
She majored in conducting and trained in multiple instruments, including piano, sarod, and rubab. Her education at the institute represented both artistic development and defiance against the restrictions imposed on women in Afghan society.
