Early Life and Education

Paul Sylvester Morton was born on July 30, 1950, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

He grew up as the seventh of nine children to Bishop Clarence Leslie Morton, Sr., a Church of God in Christ pastor who led congregations in Windsor and Detroit, and Evangelist Matilda Elizabeth Morton.

His siblings include Clarence Leslie Morton Jr., James H. Morton, Gwendolyn Morton, George Morton, and others.

From a young age he sang in church choirs, directed the youth choir, and founded a vocal group called the Junior Progressives.

He graduated from Patterson Collegiate and St. Clair College in Windsor, where he majored in accounting while excelling in music.

After moving to New Orleans in 1972, he earned a Bachelor of Arts from Southern University, a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt University, and a Doctor of Ministry from Princeton Theological Seminary.

Career

Paul S. Morton began his ministry journey in his father’s church as a youth choir director and singer.

In 1972 he relocated to New Orleans and joined Greater St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church as an associate pastor.

At age 24, following the senior pastor’s death, he was appointed senior pastor and later married the pastor’s daughter, Debra Brown.
