Constance June Meador was born on 14 August 1941 in Elkhart, Indiana, to Hobart Meador and Wilma Meador.

The family soon returned to West Virginia and later settled in southern Ohio, where she grew up as the fourteenth child in a large family of fourteen siblings amid modest and often difficult circumstances as migrant farm workers.
