Taufik Batisah (born December 10, 1981), whose real name is Muhammad Taufik bin Batisah, is a gifted Singaporean singer and singer. He emerged as the winner of the first season of the reality TV series Singapore Idol. 

He has released four studio albums and has won several awards, including the prestigious Anugerah Juara Lagu award for his song Maafkan.

British began his singing career in 2003 when he participated in the first season of Singapore Idol. He went on to win the competition, becoming the first Male Solo Artist to do so.

Early Life & Education

Muhammad Taufik bin Batisah popularly addressed as Taufik Batisah was born on December 10th, 1981, to a Malay family. He is of mixed origin. He has Indian and Buginese roots. 

His father is called Batisah Ahmad and is an interior designer. On the other hand, his mother is called Normainah Bachok. Taufik Batisah was thirteen when his parents separated. He has a brother simply identified as Mustaffa Batisah. He is Muslim by faith.

Taufik Batisah attended Boon Lay Primary School and Jurong Secondary School and is a graduate of the Singapore Polytechnic. He later attended the National Institute of Education and obtained a diploma.

Personal Life

Even as he revealed on March 7 that Taufik Batisah was getting married in April, the 42-year-old musician had kept the identity of his wife, Sheena Akbal, a secret. He claimed to want to keep their relationship private at the time.

Taufik Batisah claimed in an interview with media present at the wedding that he is fortunate to have married Ms. Sheena Akbal, a member of the arts community whom he knew before his days as Singapore Idol.

Taufik Batisah hasn’t revealed if he has a child or not. Some publications rumored that he was expecting a baby with his wife, but there is no verifiable source to back this up.

Career

Taufik Batisah began his career singing in the local hip hop and R&B combo Bonafide alongside Mark Subramaniam, a rapper, better known by his stage name Mark Bonafide.

In 2004, he competed in Singapore Idol‘s inaugural season, a reality television program. Taufik Batisah was named the first-ever Singapore Idol on December 1, 2004, in front of more than 8,000 spectators and 1.8 million viewers nationwide at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

He signed recording deals with Sony BMG and ArtisteNetworks, Hype Records’ artist management division. It was later discovered that Taufik Batisah received 682,000 of the 1.1 million votes cast that evening, while Sylvester Sim received 418,000.

He secured several endorsement deals after winning, including ones with Harmuni Rice, Samsung, 7-Eleven convenience stores, and HSC beverages. He was the first artist from Singapore to promote Swatch, a Swiss watch company.

Taufik Batisah released his debut English album, Blessings, on January 14, 2005. His top songs from the competition, including Mrs. Jones and Me, Let’s Stay Together, Superstition, and I Dream, were included on the Album. 

Blessings went on to sell an astounding 36,000 copies, breaking the record for the best-selling local English album in the previous ten years and entering the Singapore Guinness Book of Records. In the music industry of Singapore, it still stands as a record.
