Early Life and Education
Patrick Soon-Shiong was born on 29 July 1952 in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, to Chinese immigrant parents who had fled China during World War II.
Raised by Mr and Mrs. Soon-Shiong, he grew up as the fifth of eight children, including Terrence Soon-Shiong, Gregory Soon-Shiong.
His father practiced traditional Chinese medicine and also operated a general store, while his mother cared for the family.
Patrick entered the University of the Witwatersrand at the age of 16 and completed his medical degree in 1975 at 23.

Patrick Soon-Shiong began his medical career as a surgeon and researcher, working in South Africa during the Soweto uprising before continuing his surgical training in Canada.
After joining UCLA, he became involved in pancreas transplantation and diabetes research and performed the first pancreas transplant on the West Coast.
In 1991, he left academic medicine to pursue biotechnology and pharmaceutical development, founding a medical research company and subsequently establishing American Pharmaceutical Partners.
His work in drug delivery eventually led to the development of Abraxane, a nanoparticle formulation of paclitaxel used in cancer treatment.
Patrick’s business career expanded dramatically through American Pharmaceutical Partners and Abraxis BioScience, which were sold in multibillion-dollar transactions in 2008 and 2010.
