Early Life & Education

Schabir Shaik, a well-known public figure, was born in Johannesburg in 1957. He spent his early years in Greenwood Park, Durban, in the former Natal province. His father, of Indian South African descent, originated from Pietermaritzburg in Natal, while his mother, unfortunately, passed away during his childhood. 

Shaik belongs to a large family with six brothers and one sister; among them, Salim Shaik and Faisal Shaik are his two elder brothers, and Yunus ShaikMoe Shaik, and Chippy Shaik are his younger brothers.

After completing his primary education, Schabir Shaik enrolled at the M.L. Sultan Technikon, now known as the Durban University of Technology, where he pursued a degree in electrical engineering. His academic journey faced a setback when he was found cheating on his 1990 High Voltage Engineering T5 exam. This incident resulted in a one-year expulsion from the school, but Schabir was later allowed to return and complete his degree.

Career

Schabir Shaik embarked on his entrepreneurial journey in the 1990s by founding Nkobi Holdings, with the company’s name paying homage to the late ANC treasurer, Thomas Nkobi. While Shaik initially held sole ownership, the company’s shareholding changed over time. Regardless, he effectively controlled all corporate entities within the Nkobi group and held directorial positions until 2005, when he faced corruption charges and underwent prosecution.

Over the years, Schabir Shaik developed a close personal friendship with Jacob Zuma, an ANC stalwart and later South Africa’s deputy president. The bond between Shaik and Zuma strengthened, with Shaik reported to become Zuma‘s financial advisor in 2002. Their association had roots in their shared history as members of the ANC in the 1980s.

In May 2002, Schabir Shaik faced legal troubles for possessing confidential minutes of President Thabo Mbeki‘s cabinet. The relationship between Shaik and Zuma came under scrutiny, revealing that Shaik had supported Zuma financially since his return from political exile in Mozambique in 1990. At that time, Zuma had been elected Chairperson of the African National Party, and Shaik provided him with financial assistance through interest-free loans with no repayment deadline.
