Aurora James, the renowned businesswoman, was born on 12 July 1984 in Guelph, Ontario, Canada. She is a Canadian creative director, activist, and fashion designer. 

Her father is from Ghana, while her mother, Randa James, is from Canada. She was raised in both Canada and Jamaica. Her father, whose name is unknown to the media but can be referred to as Mr. James, raised her. There is nothing known about her siblings. 

Aurora James majored in journalism after studying fashion for a year at Ryerson University. She interned at Fashion Television for Jeanne Beker after graduating from Ryerson.

Career

After completing high school, Aurora James relocated to Toronto to pursue a career in modelling. However, her interests shifted, and she decided to switch her major from fashion to journalism at Ryerson University. 

This led her to work alongside Jeanne Beker on fashion television. Her passion for exploring diverse cultures took her to Morocco in 2011, where she spent two years collaborating with local artisans and experimenting with indigenous materials.

Inspired by the experience, she established Brother Vellies in 2013 to introduce traditional African footwear to a global audience while supporting and empowering African artisans.

Brother Vellies has gained recognition from notable figures such as Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, and Elaine Welteroth, who have all worn the brand. Its dedication to sustainability and ethical production has been highly commended. Aurora James‘ accomplishments include winning the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund prize in 2015 and being inducted into the CFDA in 2016.

Aurora James developed the Fifteen Percent Pledge in 2020. This campaign invites well-known stores to give black-owned businesses 15% of their product options and purchasing power. This promise has already been backed by over 30 well-known firms, including Sephora, Target, and Nordstrom.
