Velda Tan (born September 3, 1987), also addressed as belluspuera, is a renowned Singaporean entrepreneur and fashion designer with over a decade of experience in the fashion industry.

She is the founder, and creative director of her Collate the Label, which is known for its contemporary and chic designs. The label has been featured in international publications in over 20 countries.

Early Life & Education

Velda Tan Was born on September 3rd, 1987, in Singapore. She is the second child in a family of all-girls, has an older sister named Viola Tan, and a younger sister named Vanya Tan.

She was a student at Methodist Girls’ School and Pioneer Junior College. She furthered her studies at the Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) but dropped out after two years. 

Between 2013 and 2014, Velda Tan attended two courses at Central Saint Martins, a college in London, where she studied drawing, pattern-making, and brand management.

Personal Life

Frederick Yap is the husband of Velda Tan, and they have a daughter named Ellery Grace Yap. Her two sisters and best friend Rachel Lim, who later became a business partner, served as her bridesmaids at the Grand Hyatt Singapore in 2012 when the couple exchanged vows. 

They worked together at Love, Bonito until Velda Tan left in 2013. Later, they established a partnership and started a restaurant in the food and beverage industry called Pince & Pints. 

Velda Tan helped with the company’s initial branding, but her husband is in charge of running things on a daily basis. She also likes to ride a motorcycle.

She revealed in a 2017 Instagram post that she has polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), a disorder that can cause infertility and, occasionally, the growth of ovarian cysts.

After numerous rounds of medication and visits to two gynecologists, Velda Tan could conceive in 2017 and gave birth to Ellery Grace Yap in January 2018.

Career

Together with her sister Viola Tan and her close friend Rachel Lim, Velda Tan co-founded Love, Bonito, BonitoChico in 2006. She was still a university student at the time. She led the company’s rebranding with her two partners in 2010 and left Love, Bonito in 2013 to pursue a solo career as a fashion designer. 

Velda Tan gave more information regarding her decision to leave the company in a 2015 interview with High Net Worth, stating: “When I left Love, Bonito, it really crushed me. I had a hard time adjusting. . . I made the decision with no regrets, but I did not understand why my inner voice was telling me to leave.”

In 2015, two years after quitting her role at Love, Bonito, Velda Tan started Collate The Label. At Singapore Fashion Week 2015, the company debuted on the runway by showcasing 22 designs from its Pre Fall 2015 collection.

In the same year, Tangs Orchard welcomed Collate the Label‘s first pop-up shop. The indigenous brand was also selected to participate in Coterie, a three-day trade expo in New York, in September 2015.

Velda Tan founded Our Second Nature in 2017, along with co-founder Lauren Tan. She oversees the organization’s design, merchandising, brand, and marketing teams. Our Second Nature has, throughout the years, opened a retail space at boutique fairs called Our Second Corner.
