He served as chairman from 1976 to 1997 and later as president and chief executive officer from 1990 to 1994, eventually becoming chairman emeritus.

In 2011, KCI agreed to a multibillion-dollar acquisition led by Apax Partners and other investors, with Leininger and affiliated shareholders retaining a significant stake at the time of the transaction.
